The NHS Business Services Authority (NHSBSA) is a Special Health Authority formed in 2006 to manage a range of key national services which directly support the front line of the NHS and, without them being delivered effectively, the NHS could not operate.
The NHSBSA is a multi sited, geographically diverse organisation. We operate a broad range of national services to scale. In total the value of transactions under our accountability represent approximately 20% of the total national NHS budget. Our extensive service portfolio includes:
- Payments to pharmacists (in England) for prescriptions dispensed in primary care settings.
- Management of the NHS Pension Scheme in England and Wales.
- Payments to dentists for work undertaken on NHS contracts in England and Wales.
- Management of a 10-year outsourced contract for the delivery of supply chain services to the NHS in England and Wales.
- Administering a range of health benefit schemes across the UK, including a low income scheme, medical and maternity exemption schemes, tax credit NHS exemption cards (in the UK) and prescription pre-payment certificates (in England).
- Provision of management information to over 25,000 registered NHS and Department of Health users on costs and trends in prescribing and dental care in England and Wales.
- Management of schemes for NHS Student Bursaries and NHS Social Work Bursaries (in England).
- Administration of the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) scheme in the UK.
- Provision of a range of hosted employment, human resources and financial services.
- Provision of NHS Protect services (in England and Wales).
